My interest in railways began while sitting on Durham Station collecting Deltic names in the 1970s. It began seriously when I made spotter visits to Tinsley, Doncaster Works and so forth.
I began photographing trains seriously in the early 80s and was just able to catch the last 40s while at college in Lancaster. I began with a Pentax MESuper and then bought a Nikon FE2 in 1987. The ME finally expired while on a trip to Maine. This was followed by an FM2 in '94 and a Nikon D100 in 2004.
I still take black and whites as they still make great photos - even 66s on HTAs. Colour slides are hard to get just right and I have had many disasters. I keep persevering.
I do have an interest in US railroads- in particular those in the North Eastern states. Photographs of my American layout can be viewed via the link. Please feel free to contact me about any of the subjects in this site.
My 'sphere of interest' is expanding into areas of entertainment!

 | Sun 30th Aug 09 | Brief encounters with SNCF in Brittany
During a weeks family holiday in a Gite near Saintt Ouen la Rouerie in Brittany I 'stumbled' across some SNCF action at Combourg, St Malo, Vitre and Dol de Bretagne. Mostly Bombardier and GECAlstom EMU trains. I know very little about these trains!
Did not see any freight except a grey 66 in Calais on the way back and a lonely diesel at Le Havre. Seems there is very little freight in the North West. Just tourist traffic to the resorts.
All pictures were taken during the week 24th to 28th August 2009.
I can recommend Mont St Michel and the castle at Fougeres. And the walled city of St Malo too! Just make sure you have a deep pocket!

 | Wed 22nd Jul 09 | An hour and a half at Stoke_on_Trent
EMU heaven!
Being in Stoke for other reasons I had time to spare so I had some time at the station. A tedious flow of emus. A few diesel units but no locos!
I'll let the pictures tell their story.
The last time I visited Stoke some 25s were parked up at the west side of the north end of the station!

 | Sat 11th Jul 09 | English Electric Class 37 Diesel Locomotives
Incredibly they are still in use on the mainline. Just! Companies like DRS and WCRC still use them and there are plenty in preservation. Keep up to date at preserved-diesels.co.uk

 | Sat 6th Jun 09 | GM Class 59s
Here are some pix of those EWS Class 59s when they were new!
They were originally purchased by National Power in the 1990s. The blue livery is quite attractive.
These are all scanned (at 2900dpi) slides (Fujichrome and Kodachrome) and they have had a bit of retouching work!

 | Wed 3rd Jun 09 | Class 60s during 2009
Class 60 'swan song' in 2009. A collection of workings with Tugs at the helm.
These workings can throw up a 60 from time to time. More often than not they are 66s. But we should enjoy the Tugs while they are still around. Might not be for too much longer!
So far in 2009:
60010
60011
60040
60059
60061
60068
60074
60091
May the Tugs tug well into 2010!

 | Sat 9th Aug 08 | First GBRf Class 66 locomotives
The GBRf 66s aren't common in my area but I do occasionally get the chance to 'bag' a few on trips. Peterborough is a busy place and some of the GBRf 66s are based there. During a recent visit four appeared on workings in the space of one hour.
Some did appear in the Wakefield area during 2006 working stone trains to East Anglia.
The 66s may be tedious but at least they come in different colours!

 | Fri 1st Aug 08 | Sheffield Supertram
Its something I've been wanting to cover for a while now. The Sheffield Supertram is now an established part of Sheffield now.
There are little bits of the older system here and there in Sheffield. On Attercliffe Road there is an old tram depot building now in use as a retail center. There was an old tram line pole near by but that was removed earlier this year. What a shame!
The system needs expanding!

 | Wed 28th May 08 | Classics of Traction - 1980s
A collection of Black and White images of real diesel and electric locos on real trains from the early 1980s. I've also found some of Consett in 1983-4.
They were shot on Ilford FP4 (200 ISO), HP5 and XP1. Cameras included a Pentax ME Super, Praktica MTL3 and a Carl Zeis fixed lens. These were my 'apprentice' days. The negs were scanned at 2900 dpi and left in their 'RAW' state. So foregive me for the 'meteor showers', 'snow storms' and 'solar flares'.
I was able to travel quite widely then as I was based at my parent's house and hadn't a mortgage to pay!!!!!!!!!
I'll try to add some more from time to time and will build this up to about 100 images. I have files of negs to be sorted through. Some might get binned.
They are all (or will be) 1024 wide or high to keep the download time short. If anyone or magazine/publisher is interested in the full size picture then let me know.

 | Sun 12th Aug 07 | GM Class 66 diesels - Freightliner
Photographs of the more attractive (in my opinion) Freightliner GM loco. 66/5,66/6 and 66/9 subclasses going about their business hauling coal, cement, stone and shipping containers.
And since April 2008 the GMW binliners through Wakefield.
Can't wait to see those 68s! Chug chug chug!

 | Sat 11th Aug 07 | GM Class 66 diesels -EWS
EWS Class 66 locomotives doing what they were designed to do.
Its still worth going out with the camera because there are plenty of freights to get. If you know where to look.
The 66s look good in the EWS gold and maroon! They sound quite exciting when they working hard pushing or pulling something. They sometimes clag too!
I've heard of various nicknames for these GMs including 'Shed' and the one I really like.... 'Ying Ying' (due to the idling sound they make).
The vast majority of these images (ie those taken after 2004) are from NEF-RAW images. Camera: Nikon D100 DSLR. Superb!
The most recent images (taken in 2009) are RAW from a D700 camera. Even better!
2008 gets off to a swing with shots of 66175 and 66101 around Wakefield. And more...

This site is dedicated to the modern traction enthusiast. Both diesel, electric locomotives and multiple units are included. Photos are added on a regular basis.
Collections include preservation sites and lineside shots of BR and EWS trains from the 1990s to the present. Browse at your leisure and enjoy the views. Our railways are in a constant state of flux.
I never thought I'd take an interest in units. I must say they are very interesting and colourful. But sadly not made in Britain anymore. I like those 185s but hate those 175s!
I've added a link to a magazine called Transit Magazine. They report on the latest developments in our railway passenger system. |
